Cepton Introduces the World’s Smallest Wide Field of View Lidar Sensor for Near-Range Applications LiDAR sensors perform better than other sensor types in critical cases for traffic analysis and monitoring applications. They offer 24/7 availability due to superior perception capabilities in all lighting conditions, including night-time, intense headlight glare, and shadows. They also provide excellent angular resolution compared to radar-based systems and minimize false positives and negatives. As driverless cars need to react in real-time to any number of unpredictable elements, the ability to gather data on the split-second scale is highly advantageous. LiDAR is uniquely placed as a technology to solve these issues, and many self-driving cars under development already these detectors. ALP.Lab and Cepton are working in conjunction with each other to implement LiDAR-based solutions to train autonomous vehicles. ALP.Lab and Cepton - Using LiDAR Intelligence to Increase Road Safety Founded in 2017, ALP.Lab provides testing services for the AV industry. Cepton was founded in 2016 and provides mass-market LiDAR solutions for a variety of industries. ALP.Lab and Cepton are working together to drive the future of safer autonomous vehicle deployment. Cepton’s HeliusTM Smart Lidar System is being installed in ALP.Lab’s testing area in Austria. The HeliusTM system combines Cepton’s state-of-the-art Micro Motion Technology (MMT®) LiDAR technology with cutting-edge software to provide anonymized and intelligent 3D perception. The Helius system takes cloud point data from a connected sensors network, delivering real-time three-dimensional information on object locations, dimensions, and velocities. Video Credit: Cepton Technologies/YouTube.com This ability enables accurate tracking and classification of many different objects involved in a traffic situation. It also collects anonymized data, allows complete privacy of gathered data, and protects pedestrians and vehicles' anonymity while feeding back rich and accurate traffic data to ALP.Lab. This enables deep analysis of real-life conditions. The system also offers optimal ease of integration.

GM extends plant shutdowns due to global semiconductor chip shortage GM is extending temporary shutdowns at three of its North American plants due to a global semiconductor chip shortage. The decision to extend the shutdowns is in an effort to prioritize chips for production of GM's full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. GM previously said the North American plants would be closed until at least mid-March. General Motors employees work on the assembly line at the Fairfax Assembly & Stamping Plant in Kansas City, Kansas. DETROIT — General Motors is extending temporary shutdowns at three of its North American plants due to a global semiconductor chip shortage, which is expected to shed billions off automakers' earnings in 2021. The decision to extend the shutdowns at car and crossover plants in Kansas, Mexico and Ontario, Canada is in an effort to prioritize chips for production of GM's full-size pickup trucks and SUVs, the company said Wednesday. GM also said its Gravatai plant in Brazil will take downtime in April and May. GM previously said the North American plants would be closed until at least mid-March. The San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico is now scheduled to be down through the end of March, while the U.S. and Canada plants will be shuttered until at least mid-April. The announcement comes a week after GM CFO Paul Jacobson said the chip shortage was improving , but the company still expected the delays to lower its free cash flow by $1.5 billion and $2.5 billion in 2021. "GM continues to leverage every available semiconductor to build and ship our most popular and in-demand products, including full-size trucks and SUVs for our customers," the company said in a statement. "GM has not taken downtime or reduced shifts at any of its truck plants due to the shortage." Automakers and parts suppliers began warning of the shortage late last year after demand for vehicles rebounded more strongly than expected after automakers were forced to shut down production last spring to help contain the coronavirus pandemic. Consulting firm AlixPartners estimates the chip shortage to cut $60.6 billion in revenue from the global automotive industry this year. That estimate includes the entire supply chain — from dealers and automakers to large suppliers and their smaller counterparts. Semiconductor chips are extremely important components of new vehicles for areas like infotainment systems and more basic parts such as power steering and brakes. Depending on the vehicle and its options, experts say a vehicle could have hundreds of semiconductors. Higher-priced vehicles with advanced safety and infotainment systems have far more and different types of chips than a base model.
